Is Athari Aqidah Free from Philosophy?

Atharism is not philosophy-free: it has a distinctive ontology, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of language.

This expands on my Instagram infographic, “Is AtharÄ« Ê¿AqÄ«dah Philosophical?” The original is linked below.

SalafÄ«s tend to argue that only the Ashāʿirah and MāturÄ«diyyah engaged in kalām or philosophy — that the AtharÄ« school, by contrast, simply took the texts at face value and did no theorizing at all. I want to challenge that self-image. Atharism is not the absence of philosophy; it is a distinctive philosophy, with commitments that can be laid out as clearly as any other school’s. Here are four of its components.

1. Ontology

On the question of causation, the AtharÄ« position — articulated by Ibn Taymiyyah — is neither the Aristotelian doctrine of independent natural causes nor the AshÊ¿arÄ« doctrine of occasionalism, on which God is the sole direct cause of every event and created things have no real causal power. Ibn Taymiyyah held instead that God endows created things with genuine causal powers (al-qawl al-mudaÊ¿) — real secondary causes that operate by God’s grant. That is a third, distinct ontological option, not a refusal to have one.

2. Epistemology

Atharism did not rest on revelation (waḥy) alone. It introduced a considered role for fiá¹rah — the innate disposition — and for Ê¿aql á¹£arīḥ, sound and uncorrupted reason, as sources that stand alongside revelation and, on the AtharÄ« view, never truly contradict it. That is an epistemology: a worked-out account of the sources of knowledge and how they relate, not a naïve textualism.

3. Metaphysics

On the divine nature, the school’s handling of the attributes has real metaphysical structure. God is not treated as a bare, featureless monad; He is known through His attributes, which are affirmed as genuinely descriptive of Him. The result resembles what a philosopher would call a bundle account — the reality is known through its composite attributes rather than collapsed into an undifferentiated simple — and holding that position coherently requires metaphysical work.

4. Linguistics

Finally, a philosophy of language. The AtharÄ« commitment to al-asmāʾ al-mutakāfiʾah and its rejection of majāz (metaphor) as a category for the divine attributes is a substantive linguistic thesis: that the attributes are real and to be taken according to their genuine meaning, as with the language of the Qur’an generally. Denying that scriptural language about God is merely figurative is not a failure to theorize about language; it is a theory of language, and a contestable one that has to be argued for.

The upshot

Put these together and the claim that Atharism is philosophy-free collapses. It has an ontology, an epistemology, a metaphysics, and a philosophy of language. One may agree or disagree with any of them — but the honest way to engage the school is to argue with its philosophy, not to pretend it doesn’t have one.
